What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain, by definition, is pain that is present for longer than three months, which is generally accepted as the expected tissue-healing timeline.  However, more commonly, the pain has been present for several months or even years.

Pain is the #1 reason people go to the doctor, and unresolved pain is one of the top reasons patients seek out an integrative practitioner.   Chronic pain exists in approximately 20% of the adult population which makes it a very common reason for patients to seek pain relief from sometimes many healthcare practitioners.

Pain is a symptom, or an effect of something wrong. There are two ways to approach chronic pain. One is to treat the symptoms (temporarily cover it) and the other is an integrative medicine approach, i.e., to treat the root cause (fix it).

Integrative Medicine Chronic Pain Treatment

For acute pain, we offer chiropractic treatment, massage, acupuncture, cupping, manual regulation therapy and more  which can be very effective.

For effective resolution of pain, treatment should be directed at fixing the root cause.  When the root cause of pain is properly addressed, the symptoms often disappear. The symptoms may appear as muscle/joint pain, fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic depression, headache or other dysfunction- but the actual problem may be infection, viruses, poor nutrition, a structural or dental issue, toxicity, or unresolved emotional distress.

We look at the whole body to locate the cause of pain. Pain may be local, but can often be referred; that is, your knee pain may be a symptom of something else going on in your body, like a back problem or a chronic dental infection. The knee may hurt but the source of the pain may be elsewhere.

A Comprehensive Approach to Chronic Pain Relief

Chronic pain requires more investigation into the source of pain.

Pain is a threshold problem that typically involves more than one component, and sometimes all four components when the problem is complex. The components that may contribute to chronic pain can include Structural issues, Metabolic or Neurological issues, or a Psycho-emotional connection. That is why chronic pain disorders can be difficult to treat. Therapies directed at only one component will usually net a poor result and ultimately be more costly. The whole body approach will assess and treat all four components of chronic pain as needed.

After thorough testing and evaluation as needed, an individualized treatment plan is created for you which may include:

Our comprehensive approach to chronic pain relief utilizes innovative and effective functional assessment tools such as Heart Rate Variability and Manual Regulation Therapy (MRT).

In our assessment test with heart rate variability, we measure the integrity of the autonomic nervous system which is composed of the two parts:  1. the sympathetic (fight or flight) and 2. the parasympathetic (regenerative and immunity).  With chronic pain patients, we often see an up regulated sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and a down regulated parasympathetic (rest and regenerative).

Manual Regulation Therapy has been shown to normalize the autonomic nervous system thus breaking the continuous pain spasm cycle and moving the patient to a place of improved function.

Integrative medicine practitioners believe that the body is usually self-healing; the doctor merely helps remove the blocks and enhances the process. This is the miracle of healing.
