What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The carpal tunnel – a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand – houses the median nerve and tendons. Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed. The result may be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm.Early detection and treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is important for this debilitating syndrome, and yet some of the early symptoms are subtle and can be easily mistaken for other issues.

The first symptom people usually notice is that their hand and fingers become numb and tingling while they are sleeping, causing them to wake up frequently during the night. Most people do not even realize that this is a symptom of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and attribute the numb feeling to sleeping on their hands in an awkward position, cutting off blood circulation.

What Can you Do about this Pain?

The hardest decision that anyone makes is to get our health concerns checked out.  A lot of us are afraid to go to a health practitioner because of what we may find out.  Men are especially notorious for this! If we go to a health practitioner he/she may tell us we have a serious issue, or we need to change our lifestyle or that we may need to take pills. This fear of bad news or that we have to change our lifestyle stops us from getting care.  Once you can move past this fear you need to decide to get your health under control, but who should you go and see?

The second hardest decision a person can make is what you should do about my medical condition or symptoms.  Do I see an orthopedic medical doctor?  Do I see a massage therapist?  Or a Chiropractic Doctor?  This is difficult on patients because you don’t want to be referred from one practitioner to another.  The first step to answering this question is to ask yourself what are you willing to do.

Do you want to take a natural approach or are you inclined to surgery? Are you determined to work on this pain problem as best as you can or are you only motivated because of the pain?  All of these questions will answer what health practitioner you should see.  Surgery and medicine are quick fixes. But quick fixes can set you up for quick failures.  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition you need to work on longer term.

Testimonial:  “I was about to have surgery on both my wrists, but my friend insisted I see Dr. Coy first. I have had carpal tunnel for over 10 years, and had been in a lot of pain. I began seeing Dr. Coy and over a period of several months I had vast improvement in my wrists, to the point I was almost symptom free. I went from not being able to go more than 15 minutes without thinking about the pain in my wrist to symptom free.  I  was very happy with the outcome. Now, a year later, I have slight symptoms but nowhere near what I had- and surgery is no longer on the table.”  D.E.
