Is Your Brain Addicted to Sugar?

by | Apr 4, 2012 | Addiction, Integrative Health Blog, Nutrition, Sugar

Research shows that sugar can trigger compulsive cravings and stimulate the need for more and more for the same effect, similar behavior to a drug addiction, although not classified as such.

Many Americans had a rude awakening recently if they were in front of their televisions watching the popular news show “60 Minutes”.

Americans are Addicted to Sugar

In it, a story was broadcast called “Is Sugar Toxic?”  Not only was the question of toxicity addressed, but additionally, researchers showed how pleasure centers in the brain are stimulated upon consuming sugar, which speaks to the addictive nature of this substance. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the journalist covering the story, looked almost shocked when he was told that sugar was as addictive as the drug cocaine.

If you’ve been following my work as a health coach over the years, none of the information in this news story would have been new to you, as I’ve been trying to educate the public on the dangers of this highly toxic, highly addictive substance for what seems like ages now.

So, I’m sure you can imagine how delighted I was to see this story finally being featured on mainstream television.

Key Points About Sugar

Here’s a quick list of key points that was made during the broadcast:
  • Sugar may be a bigger part of most people’s diet than they realize. So, even if sugary treats are not being consumed, sugar could be a large part of the diet due to ‘hidden sugars’ included in processed foods.
  • Dr. Robert Lustig, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist from CA, is leading a sugar reduction campaign.
  • He concludes that obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease are all related to excess sugar consumption and says 75% of which are preventable.
  • Additionally, it was reported that cancer tumors thrive off of sugar as noted by Harvard professor Louis Cantley.
  • Last, Dr. Gupta then underwent testing which showed how the pleasure centers in his brain responded when he consumed sugar. It was noted that with constant or repeated exposure to sugar, as many Americans have on a daily basis through the dietary choices they make, the brain can become ‘desensitized’ to sugar which causes the it to seek more and more in order to get the same pleasurable effect. This is the same bio-chemical process that drug addicted persons experience.
If you’re someone who has tried, unsuccessfully, to give up sugar, you can take some comfort in knowing that your failure may not have been due to simple ‘lack of willpower’.  Conversely, you may be suffering from a sincere biochemical addiction, or there may be some other underlying imbalance in your system which could be causing your uncontrollable sugar cravings and inability to simply quit eating it. Talk to an integrative physician if you seem to be craving sugar, as this may be an imbalance in blood glucose, or hormones, even stress and some medications may cause sugar cravings, but get it checked.
